Centenary Series – Article 7 – “Celebrating 100 Years of the Divine Voice”

When Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba spoke, the world listened. His words were not mere sounds but vibrations of Truth that stilled the restless mind and ignited the sleeping soul. Every word of His carried timeless significance, as He Himself reminded us:

“I never speak without purpose.

Every word of Mine carries meaning beyond the moment."

— Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 7

My life is My Message” declared Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. But for millions around the Globe, it was His voice—sweet, firm, universal, and divinely authoritative—that became the lamp of their life. His words did not merely advise; they awakened. His discourses were not just spiritual lectures; they were waves of consciousness calling humanity back to its divine source.

Over 41 volumes of “Sathya Sai Speaks” and numerous of His recorded discourses stand as timeless testimony to the power of Truth spoken without ego, desire, or fear. These messages continue to guide, correct, and uplift souls across every continent, regardless of religion, nationality, or age.

The Voice of Universal Wisdom

Bhagawan spoke in simple Telugu, with occasional Sanskrit shlokas and English phrases, yet His message transcended all linguistic boundaries. Whether addressing a villager or a Vedic scholar, a scientist or a child, His words pierced the heart with the same luminous clarity.

Once, a devotee who had never studied the scriptures said, ‘Swami’s words reached my heart more clearly than any book ever could.’ Such was the power of His simple Telugu speech—it needed no scholarly ornament, for it was the eternal language of Love, carrying the fragrance of the Divine Mother’s embrace.  He once said,

"I do not speak to show off My scholarship.

I speak to awaken your Divinity”

Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 12

In His every utterance, there was the fragrance of the Vedas, the essence of the Upanishads, the power of the Bhagavad Gita, and the sweetness of pure devotion.

Words That Echo the Vedas and the Bible Alike

Swami often drew from multiple faiths, reaffirming the unity of all religions. In a 1972 discourse, He declared:

“Let the different faiths exist. Let them flourish.

Let the glory of God be sung

in all languages and in a variety of tunes

Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 11

He would quote the Bhagvad Gita:  “Paritranaya Sadhunam, Vinashaya Cha Dushkritam...” –To protect the righteous, destroy evil, and re-establish dharma…and the Bible:  “Love thy neighbour as thyself”. — emphasizing that Love and Righteousness are universal teachings.

 Core Messages from His Discourses

Here are five profound messages often repeated in His talks:

1. Love All, Serve All

“There is only one language, the language of the heart”

                              Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 28)

This was not a slogan but a spiritual command. Swami encouraged everyone to live with compassion as action—to see God in all and serve them with humility. This message continues today in the form of Sai devotees running free kitchens, medical camps, and blood donation drives across the world.

2. Help Ever, Hurt Never

“The best way to love God is to

Love all and Serve all”.

 Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 31

Through this maxim, Swami urged us to become harmless in word, thought, and deed. Kindness was not an option—it was a spiritual duty.

3. Ceiling on Desires

“Desire is the root cause of unrest.

Reduce desires, and peace will follow”

Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 16

This initiative encouraged people to limit consumption, avoid waste of money, time, food, and energy, and redirect the saved resources towards service. At a time of climate change and consumerism, this teaching is profoundly relevant: reducing waste, conserving resources, and living simply are not only spiritual acts but also global responsibilities.

4. Education in Human Values

“The end of education is character”.

 Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 15

Swami revolutionized education by integrating Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema, and Ahimsa into the school curriculum, making value-based learning central to life.

5. Realize the Atma Within

“You are not the body, you are not the mind you are the Atma, the eternal spirit”

Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 10

The goal of human life, He reminded us, is Self-realization. All spiritual practices must ultimately lead us to this truth.

Timeless Relevance in a Turbulent World

Swami’s discourses addressed both eternal spiritual truths and practical worldly issues: education, healthcare, environmental awareness, interfaith harmony, morality in politics, role of youth, status of women, and the importance of family.  In 1983, Swami said:

“Modern man knows everything about the

world but nothing about himself”

Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 16

In another discourse, Swami warned:

“Science without spirituality is dangerous.

Spirituality without action is empty”

Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 13

His voice was not reactive but prophetic, addressing issues like global warming, corruption, and the emptiness of material life decades before the world saw their full consequences. Just as the Buddha taught that desire is the root of suffering, and Jesus urged humility and service, Swami reminded the world that true peace lies in returning to values, not possessions.

The Power of His Voice

Again and again, devotees testify that just hearing His voice—whether live or recorded—brought peace, tears, and clarity, as if He were speaking directly to them.

One devotee wrote, “I opened a random discourse in ‘Sathya Sai Speaks’ during a time of despair. The page held exactly the answer I needed”.  Another recalled, “He asked questions I had never spoken aloud—only thought, and He answered them publicly, with Love.”

Swami Himself once said:

“I know the past, present, and future of all.

I give each one exactly what they need,

in the moment they need it”

Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 14

A Call to Listen Again – and Live His Words

As we celebrate 100 years of Bhagawan’s Advent on Earth, we are called not only to recall His words but to live them.

  • Let us revisit His books, His discourses, and His recorded talks.

  • Let us make His teachings a part of our daily reflection, not just occasional inspiration.

  • Let us create study circles, youth discussions, or family Satsang centered on His Divine Message.

As we approach His centenary, let us resolve that every home resound at least once a week with His discourses, His bhajans, and His message of love.

“When you practice even a fraction of what I say,

your life will be transformed”

— Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 5

Conclusion: The Eternal Voice

The physical form may come and go, but Truth is eternal. Swami's voice was the voice of Sanātana Dharma—ancient, ever-fresh, and universal.

Let us keep a copy of “Sathya Sai Speaks", not as a trophy on our shelves but as a guidebook for the soul. And let us remember His assurance:

“Though I may not speak, My silence too will teach.

Those who listen within shall hear Me always”

— Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 6

As lamps are lit across the world for His Centenary, let us light the lamp of His words within our hearts. May His words echo as mantras in our hearts, guiding our thoughts, shaping our deeds, and awakening the eternal light within us. This is the true Centenary celebration of Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
